Tom Cruise and
Morgan Freeman sent all other films into oblivion this weekend with a
reported $38.2 million at the box office for their science-fiction
film's opening weekend.
The futuristic film, which also stars Quantum of Solace actress Olga Kurylenko, topped the second-highest grossing film, Jackie Robinson biopic 42, by over $20 million.
42, in its second week in theaters, extended its box-office total to $54 million after a strong opening for the film, in which the baseball legend is portrayed by Chadwick Boseman.
Computer-animated adventure film The Croods, starring the voices of Emma Stone, Nicholas Cage, and Ryan Reynolds, maintained steady numbers in its fifth week of release, boosting its gross total to $154.9 million with a solid $9.5 million for the weekend.
The other running films in the nine-figure club, G.I. Joe: Retaliation ($111.2 million) and Oz The Great and Powerful ($223.8 million), also saw steady quantities in their fourth and seventh weeks, respectively.
Despite finishing No. 4 overall, Scary Movie 5,
starring Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan, continued its dreary run in
wide-release, pulling in a mere $6.5 million in its second week.
The Scary Movie franchise
had generated over $817 million prior to its fifth installment, with
each of its films producing at least $100 million totals at the box
office. The least-grossing of all films, Scary Movie 2, made $141 million in 2001.
