‘The Talk’ Co-Host Sara Gilbert Announces Engagement to Rocker Linda Perry

But the best part of it all was the incredibly romantic story behind the proposal from Perry, 47, which Gilbert, 38, shared on air Monday with co-hosts Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler, and Sheryl Underwood.

Rather than just pop the question casually over dinner, Perry arranged quite an elaborate picnic for the pair at an L.A. park.
"We have food and we're eating it, it's really sweet and there's this guy sitting playing guitar, like a street musician, and he starts playing this song that we love, that's kind of popular right now. And I'm like, 'Oh, that's so weird, this is so magical and amazing,'" Gilbert began.
"So, that ends and she's like, 'Oh, I'm gonna ask him to play this other song,' but this other song is really obscure and this guy wouldn't know it, but magically he knows it … And I'm sitting there thinking, 'Well, if I ever proposed to her, this would be an amazing way to do it.' … And suddenly the people picnicking next to us pull out string instruments from under the blanket and walk over and they start playing 'Love Song' [by The Cure]. And then a trombone and a saxophone start.
"Then she goes to her backpack and she pulls out some T-shirts and the first T-shirt says, 'Will,' and then she pulls out another T-shirt that says, 'You,' and then 'Marry,' and then 'Me,' and the last one is a (T-shirt with a) question mark. And then she goes to her backpack and gets a ring. So, I'm like, 'Yeah, after that spectacle!'" she shared.
"So, then she says, 'OK, turn around,' and I turn around and our moms are there and a couple friends, and she said, 'I wanted them to be here, because this is our future,' and it was so sweet … So, I think that's it and it's the most amazing proposal ever and then she says, 'Oh, there's one more thing.' And this guy walks up and she's like, 'This is John Waite,' and he starts playing 'Missing You,'" she continued, having explained earlier that the latter song had special meaning.
"I had always said that I thought 'Missing You' should be our song, and she said, 'That's so weird, that's totally a breakup song … So, we had our proposal with our breakup song, which is great," Gilbert concluded.
Gilbert then thanked all of her co-hosts for being so supportive of her regarding gay marriage. She came out publicly as a lesbian in 2010, and has two children, son Levi, 8, and daughter Sawyer, 5, from her relationship with her former partner Alison Adler. They broke up in 2011, and Gilbert and Perry started dating soon thereafter.
Perry, the former lead singer of 4 Non Blondes, is best known for her work as a songwriter and producer for artists including Christina Aguilera and Pink. She first came onto the rock 'n' roll landscape in 1993, when 4 Non Blondes released their lone hit single, "What's Up?", which has been an anthem for generations to come.
